Gobelet 550, La Rochère

2025

A glass tumbler to celebrate La Rochère's 550th anniversary.

What makes humans unique is that no other animal has ever ventured towards fire.  Why have we managed to overcome our flight instinct? Why did we venture towards danger, towards fire, in order to preserve and control it?

Two mental mechanisms may be at work in overcoming our instinct:

Preservation and intuition.

Preserving things gradually forms memory, because perception is fleeting.

And what is preserved from perception allows us to project ourselves into the future.

There is a direction, so intuition can arise.

If there is something magical about the transformation of glass, it is that it reactivates our choice to be human.

The intention, the purpose of glass, became clear to me when I visited the La Rochère production workshop.

There, you can see a drop of molten glass falling into a metal mould.

Water is our connection and also one of the reasons why La Rochère was established in 1465 on the banks of the Ourche River.

La Rochère is celebrating its 550th anniversary, inviting us to rediscover, through collaboration, a relationship with the material and a sense of belonging.
